Growth mindset + coding = ❤️

Have you ever heard of growth mindset vs. fixed mindset? I had in a way, but it was a while ago I reflected on how much it actually affects my learning experience. Being at a quite challenging part of the coding bootcamp I’m attending, I think I needed the reminder 💡

About a month ago I attended an evening lecture with Linda Pålsson, business developer and community manager at Science Park Jönköping. Linda talked about daring to follow your goals and dreams, and used the example with growth mindset vs. fixed mindset as a really important ingredient for success (and making the journey towards it so much more fun and enjoyable). Take a look at this image and you’ll see what I mean:

Not really that hard to figure out which one sounds like most fun, right? 💁‍♀️

When learning how to code, I think growth mindset is the key to everything in your learning process. The ups and downs, the failures and the success. Adapting to more of a growth mindset isn’t something that is always easy to do (I mean, come on, we all have bad days…), but it sure will make your journey and learning process more fun and a little bit easier when things are tough (like… debugging in React Native as a total beginner, anyone?! 🙋‍♀️ 🤯).

The concept of Growth vs. Fixed mindset is developed by Carol Dweck, researcher at Stanford University, and there is so much more information on this subject! I found a great article by TechTello explaining the two mindsets in more detail, and there’s a sentence in the article that I really think sums it up:

In summary, a fixed mindset pulls us back and prevents us from realizing our full potential, while a growth mindset makes us explore without being afraid of the challenges ahead. It’s a choice.

You didn’t come this far to only come this far!

Learning how to code when you’re a complete beginner and decide to attend a fast-paced coding bootcamp is one of the most fun and amazing but also most challenging things I’ve ever done. Something I realized quite soon is that your mindset is crucial for success. It’s your mindset that defines how you take on a new challenge, solve problems and learn new things. When things are tough I like to remind myself of this, and the strengths that comes from choosing a growth mindset 🌟. A mindset of constantly wanting to learn more, share knowledge and help others, and never giving up when facing obstacles.

When starting the Technigo bootcamp we got some really great tips of TED talks to watch to prepare ourselves for the learning process in the bootcamp. Watch them, I think they’re really good and helpful to prepare yourself for a new challenge! 💪
